Blocked DPF, repeated warning lights or regeneration problems? Before committing to a replacement diesel particulate filter, establish whether the existing filter can be recovered and why the problem developed.
At Prestige Performance Group in Newtownards, we provide DPF diagnostics, on-car cleaning and off-car cleaning for private customers, independent garages and the motor trade throughout Northern Ireland.
On-car DPF cleaning: £249. Off-car DPF cleaning: £199. Diagnostic assessments and additional repairs are separate.
Our off-car service is filter-only: drop off your already-removed DPF and collect after cleaning. We do not provide removal or refitting as part of this service. Arrange those jobs with your own garage or mechanic.
We are listed in the Mobile Eco Tuning METClean specialist directory. Whether the concern is exhaust restriction, failed regeneration or possible contamination after turbocharger failure, our approach remains the same: Assessment First. Diagnose Properly. Fix It Right.

What Is a DPF and Why Does It Become Blocked?
A diesel particulate filter captures soot produced during combustion, reducing the particulate emissions leaving the exhaust. Under suitable conditions, regeneration oxidises accumulated soot at elevated exhaust temperatures.
Regeneration does not remove everything. Non-combustible ash accumulates during the filter's working life and cannot be burned away through normal regeneration. Engine faults, sensor problems and unsuitable operating conditions can also prevent regeneration from completing.
Common contributing factors include:
- Repeated short journeys and interrupted regenerations.
- Excessive soot production or engine-management faults.
- Exhaust-temperature or differential-pressure sensor faults.
- Damaged, blocked or incorrectly connected pressure pipes.
- EGR faults, thermostat problems and incorrect engine temperatures.
- Exhaust leaks, excessive oil consumption and turbocharger-related contamination.
- Gradual accumulation of non-combustible ash.
A restricted DPF is often a consequence of another problem. Cleaning or replacing it without correcting that cause can allow the same symptoms to return.
Signs Your Vehicle May Have a DPF Problem
Warning lights, reduced power, limp mode, increased fuel consumption and repeated regeneration attempts can all justify investigation. Higher idle speed or cooling fans operating after shutdown can also accompany regeneration, but these observations alone do not prove that a filter is blocked.
Likewise, a fault code is not a complete diagnosis. A pressure sensor can report an incorrect restriction, while a temperature-sensor fault can prevent regeneration. We consider the measurements together before recommending treatment.
Professional On-Car DPF Cleaning: £249
On-car cleaning is intended for suitable vehicles where the filter can be treated without removing it from the exhaust system. Before recommending it, we review relevant fault information, differential pressure, calculated soot loading, regeneration history, exhaust temperatures and associated engine or emissions-system faults.
Where appropriate, specialist treatment can help reduce restrictions. Afterwards, relevant checks establish whether readings have improved and whether additional repairs remain necessary.
Not every DPF is suitable for on-car treatment. Severe restriction, significant ash accumulation, oil contamination or suspected physical damage may require a different approach. An on-car clean cannot repair a cracked substrate or replace missing internal filter material.
On-car cleaning is £249. Diagnostic assessments and additional repairs are charged separately. Read more about our on-car DPF cleaning service.
Professional Off-Car DPF Cleaning: £199
Off-car cleaning treats a filter that has already been removed from the vehicle. Depending on its construction, condition and contamination, an appropriate process can remove recoverable soot and ash deposits that normal regeneration cannot adequately address.
This service is available to private motorists, mechanics, independent garages, diesel specialists and motor traders. The arrangement is straightforward: your garage removes the filter, you drop it off with us, then collect it for your garage to refit.
The £199 price applies to the agreed cleaning of an already-removed filter. Vehicle diagnosis, replacement sensors, damaged fittings, associated repairs, transport and postal costs are not included unless expressly agreed. DPF removal and refitting are not services included in this off-car arrangement; organise them with your own workshop.
Cleaning can be a useful alternative to replacement when the substrate remains serviceable. It cannot repair cracks, melting, collapse or other structural damage, and it is not a guarantee of restored filtration efficiency or an MOT pass.
How to Drop Off and Collect Your Removed Filter
- Contact us with the vehicle and filter details, symptoms and any findings from your garage.
- Confirm suitability, price, delivery requirements and current turnaround before removal or dispatch.
- Have your own garage remove the DPF following the manufacturer's procedure. Check with us how attached sensors or accessories should be handled.
- Deliver the agreed filter to 36A Donaghadee Road, Newtownards, with your contact details and job reference.
- Collect it once the agreed work is complete. Your garage then handles refitting, required diagnostic procedures and vehicle testing.
Turnaround depends on the filter's condition, the cleaning process and current workload. Confirm any 24-hour arrangement before delivery. Collection and return of already-removed filters within North Down and Ards may be available by arrangement; this does not include removing them from vehicles.
Why Check the DPF After Turbocharger Failure?
When a turbocharger fails and allows oil into the exhaust, the DPF can become contaminated. Replacing the turbo without assessing the exhaust system can leave a restriction or contamination problem unresolved.
Not every turbocharger failure causes DPF damage or requires cleaning. The correct response depends on what failed, where the oil went and the condition of the filter.
Oil Contamination and Exhaust Restriction
Oil entering the exhaust can contaminate the filter and contribute to deposits or restricted flow. The garage should investigate the extent of contamination alongside the cause of the turbo failure, rather than assuming a replacement turbo completes the repair.
Backpressure and the Replacement Turbo
A replacement turbocharger needs suitable operating conditions, including correct lubrication, drainage and an exhaust without excessive restriction. A heavily restricted DPF can adversely affect turbocharger operation.
Garrett's diagnostic guidance includes checking that the exhaust, catalyst and DPF are not blocked or damaged. Melett also explains how DPF-related backpressure and temperature problems can affect a turbocharger. These checks do not mean that a blocked DPF causes every turbo failure.
Contamination Must Be Assessed Before Regeneration
A severely oil-contaminated filter should not simply be subjected to a forced regeneration in the hope of burning everything away. Assessment and the relevant manufacturer's repair procedure are needed before deciding whether regeneration, cleaning or replacement is appropriate.
Some contaminated filters may be recoverable through professional off-car treatment. Others have suffered damage or contamination that cleaning cannot adequately resolve. We do not promise recovery before assessing suitability.
A Filter-Cleaning Service for Garages Replacing Turbos
If you are replacing a turbocharger, contact us about the removed DPF before refitting it. We can discuss whether off-car cleaning is appropriate while your workshop manages the turbo repair and vehicle-side checks. Tell us about oil contamination before bringing or posting the unit.
Listed in the Mobile Eco Tuning METClean Specialist Directory
Prestige Performance Group is listed in the Mobile Eco Tuning METClean specialist directory. The listing describes our DPF diagnostics, on-car cleaning, off-car refurbishment and services for garages and trade customers.
It is an independently operated specialist listing, not a claim that every DPF can be recovered or that a third party guarantees the result. Confirm services, compatibility, pricing and turnaround directly with us.
Trade and Postal DPF Cleaning
Not every workshop has dedicated off-car cleaning equipment. Our service allows independent garages, mobile mechanics, motor traders, turbo specialists and fleet workshops to outsource filter cleaning while retaining responsibility for their customer's diagnosis and repair.
Whether you need one filter cleaned or want to discuss ongoing work, provide the identification and relevant diagnostic findings. Your workshop handles removal, refitting and post-repair checks; we carry out the agreed filter-only treatment.
Postal cleaning is available by prior arrangement. Contact us to confirm suitability, safe packaging, delivery and return arrangements before dispatch. A leaking or heavily oil-contaminated unit needs discussing before it is shipped. Postal and collection costs must be agreed separately.
DPF Cleaning or Replacement: Which Is Appropriate?
Cleaning may be suitable for recoverable soot or ash restrictions and certain contamination where the substrate remains intact. Replacement may be necessary for cracked, melted or collapsed material, severe unrecoverable contamination or physical failure affecting filtration.
A clean does not correct defective sensors, excessive soot production or oil entering the exhaust. Equally, a new DPF is not a repair for an engine fault. Our DPF replacement cost guide explains parts, labour and associated repair considerations.
Why Proper Diagnostics Matter
Calculated soot loading is an ECU estimate, not a direct measurement of the material inside the filter. Differential-pressure readings also need interpreting in context: high readings can reflect restriction or a measurement problem, while unusually low readings do not prove filtration is healthy.
A vehicle assessment can consider fault codes, live data, pressure readings, regeneration behaviour, temperature sensors and related engine faults. This is separate from assessing a removed filter. A filter-only cleaning service cannot confirm that the complete vehicle's regeneration system operates correctly.
Serving Newtownards and Northern Ireland
Our workshop is at 36A Donaghadee Road, Newtownards, BT23 7EU. We welcome private and trade enquiries from Bangor, Belfast, Comber, Dundonald, Holywood, the Ards Peninsula and throughout Northern Ireland. Postal arrangements provide an option for customers further away.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Does DPF Cleaning Cost?
On-car cleaning is £249 and off-car cleaning is £199. Diagnostics, associated repairs and agreed transport costs are separate. The off-car price applies to a filter supplied already removed.
Do You Remove and Refit DPFs for Off-Car Cleaning?
No. Arrange removal and refitting with your own garage or mechanic. Drop off the already-removed filter and collect it after the agreed cleaning.
Can a Blocked DPF Be Cleaned Instead of Replaced?
Potentially, where the restriction is recoverable and the substrate remains serviceable. Cleaning cannot repair physical filter damage or guarantee recovery of every blocked unit.
Should the DPF Be Checked After Turbocharger Failure?
Yes, particularly where oil has entered the exhaust or restriction is suspected. Assessment determines whether cleaning, further investigation or replacement is appropriate; cleaning is not automatically required after every turbo failure.
Can a Blocked DPF Affect a Replacement Turbocharger?
Excessive exhaust backpressure can adversely affect turbocharger operating conditions. A suspected restriction should be investigated when diagnosing the original failure and before returning the vehicle to service.
Does DPF Cleaning Remove Ash?
Appropriate off-car processes can remove recoverable ash deposits, depending on the filter and method. Normal regeneration burns soot but does not remove non-combustible ash.
Is Off-Car Cleaning Better Than On-Car Cleaning?
They suit different conditions. Off-car treatment may be appropriate for certain ash restrictions or contamination, while on-car treatment may suit other recoverable restrictions. Assessment should determine the method.
Can Garages Send Filters to You?
Yes. Trade and postal enquiries are welcome. Contact us before delivering or sending a removed filter to confirm suitability, packaging, pricing and return arrangements.
Will Cleaning Stop the Problem Returning?
It cannot guarantee that. Underlying engine or emissions faults, contamination and operating conditions must be addressed to reduce the risk of repeat problems.
Can a Cracked or Melted DPF Be Cleaned?
Cleaning cannot restore a cracked, melted or otherwise structurally failed substrate. Replacement may be necessary where physical damage prevents correct operation.
Is Forced Regeneration the Same as DPF Cleaning?
No. Regeneration oxidises accumulated soot under suitable conditions. Off-car cleaning uses a separate process on a removed filter and can address recoverable deposits, including ash that regeneration cannot burn away.
