What Is ECU Cloning?

ECU cloning is the transfer of the required data from an original engine control unit to a compatible donor unit. On a supported application, that can allow a replacement to retain the vehicle-specific information needed to work with the car.

It is not simply fitting a used ECU with the same plug. Hardware, software, security data and the condition of the original all affect what can be transferred. We check the exact units rather than promise that every ECU from the same model will work.

A complete clone depends on readable source data and suitable replacement hardware. If either is missing, we explain whether assessment, recovery or another separately quoted route is appropriate.

ECU, TCU Or Body Module?

An ECU controls the engine. A TCU manages the transmission. Both may contain vehicle-specific data, but cloning methods and any work required after fitting depend on the individual unit.

A warning light or no-communication fault does not prove the module itself has failed. Power supplies, wiring and related vehicle faults should be assessed before buying a donor. Our ECU and module testing enquiry is the starting point when the fault or replacement route is uncertain.

Choosing A Compatible Donor ECU

Buying a replacement by vehicle registration or casing shape alone can leave you with a unit we cannot use. Send us the original label and the proposed donor label before you commit to a purchase.

• Vehicle make, model, year, engine and transmission details.
• Clear photographs of both identification labels and connectors.
• Part numbers, hardware references and software details where available.
• The fault symptoms, diagnostic findings and any previous repairs.
• Whether the original communicates, has water damage or has already been opened.

Matching numbers are useful, but they are not the only check. We confirm whether the proposed pairing is suitable and explain any additional requirements before work proceeds.

What If The Original ECU Is Damaged?

A unit that no longer works in the vehicle may still contain readable data. Equally, corrosion, damaged connections or an internal fault can make the required information inaccessible. We cannot promise a clone from an unreadable or missing original.

Cloning transfers data; it does not repair a boost leak, wiring fault, sensor problem or damaged gearbox. The cause of the original failure must also be addressed so a replacement is not exposed to the same problem.

If recovery, repair, immobiliser recovery or further coding is needed, it is assessed and priced separately. Do not discard the original unit, even if you believe it has failed completely.

ECU Cloning In Newtownards, With Postal Support

Once the job and reference are confirmed, send the original and compatible donor together, individually protected so neither can damage the other. Protect the connector pins and include your reference, contact details and return address. Use tracked, appropriately insured delivery.

Postage is additional. For Republic of Ireland enquiries, confirm the return-shipping and any applicable customs arrangements before dispatch. We agree the next steps for your job rather than promise an unverified turnaround.

How Much Does ECU Cloning Cost?

Standard bench cloning is £140 and standard boot cloning is £175. The catalogue identifies the route for the selected unit; complex or specialist work may have its own price. Standalone initial module testing is £49 and is a separate service, not an included repair.

Where unlocking is required, it adds £199 including VAT. Standard bench cloning with an unlock therefore totals £339; standard boot cloning with an unlock totals £374, before any delivery or other agreed work.

Replacement hardware, postage, repairs, data recovery, immobiliser recovery and vehicle coding are not included in standard cloning. We confirm the requirement and total before you order.

Cloning, Unlocking And Remapping Are Different

Cloning transfers supported data to replacement hardware. ECU unlocking enables the relevant access on a supported unit; it does not itself clone the ECU or add a performance calibration.
