Been told your ECU is locked and your vehicle cannot be remapped?
That does not necessarily mean the end of the road. It may mean the engine control unit needs a supported unlocking procedure before the intended programming work can take place.
Looking for a postal ECU unlocking service in the UK or Ireland? Prestige Performance Group provides in-house unlocking for supported engine control units, helping garages, remappers and vehicle owners prepare an eligible ECU for its next programming stage.
You do not need to bring the vehicle to our workshop to use the ECU-only postal service. Once compatibility and the work have been agreed, your workshop can remove the unit and send it to us from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.
The work is carried out at our Newtownards workshop. The postal service is designed for customers beyond our local area, not just drivers who can visit in person.
Our eligible ECU-only unlocking service starts at £199 including VAT, with return postage charged separately.
The first step is straightforward: send us the ECU details and tell us what you need to do with it. We can then check the available support and explain the next steps before you send the unit.
What Does ECU Unlocking Actually Mean?
The engine control unit, or ECU, manages important aspects of how the engine operates. Depending on the vehicle, these include fuel injection, ignition, boost control, torque delivery and monitoring of related systems.
Modern ECUs can have protections that restrict access to their calibration software. A workshop may be able to communicate with the vehicle, read fault codes and view live data, yet still be unable to write a revised calibration using its normal programming method.
Unlocking addresses a supported programming-access restriction. It is not the same as adding a performance calibration, repairing a failed ECU or replacing a faulty engine component.
The practical question is not simply whether an ECU can be unlocked. It is whether the specific unit can be prepared for the programming operation and equipment you intend to use afterwards.
That is what needs checking before work begins.
ECU Unlocking Is Not the Same as Remapping
An unlock and a remap are separate jobs.
An unlocking procedure can make a supported ECU accessible for an agreed programming operation. A remap changes calibration settings within the engine-management software.
Unlocking alone does not promise more power, improved fuel economy or a different driving experience. Any tuning work must be specified and agreed separately.
For trade customers, that distinction matters. You may need us to prepare the ECU so your own workshop can complete the calibration work. Tell us which programming tool and intended workflow you use so we can check the relevant compatibility.
Do not assume that an ECU unlocked for one workflow will automatically work with every tuning tool or software platform.
Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECU Unlocking: Check Your Exact Unit
Our service covers supported engine control units, including eligible Bosch MD1 and MG1 applications, subject to individual verification.
An ECU family name is a starting point, not a guarantee of coverage. Hardware, processor, software version and previous programming history can affect what is possible.
Two vehicles with the same model badge can require different programming approaches. Equally, an ECU listed under a broad family may have a particular version that needs further checks.
Before sending a unit, please provide:
- Clear photographs of the ECU label and connectors.
- The manufacturer and ECU identification or part numbers.
- Vehicle make, model, engine and year.
- Hardware and software identification from your programming tool, where available.
- The tool or platform you intend to use after unlocking.
- Details of previous tuning, programming attempts, repairs or known faults.
If you do not have all the information, send what you have. We will explain what else is needed rather than asking you to guess.
How Much Does ECU Unlocking Cost in the UK?
The advertised starting price is £199 including VAT for eligible ECU-only unlocking.
It is not a universal price for every ECU, and it should not be read as an inclusive price for removing the unit from the vehicle, tuning it, repairing it and returning it.
Return postage is additional. Removal and refitting, calibration development, diagnostics, repairs or other programming services are separate unless expressly included in your agreed quotation.
If your ECU needs a different process or additional work, the scope and cost should be confirmed before proceeding.
Our aim is for you to know what you are paying for, what the service will achieve and what still needs to happen afterwards.
Postal ECU Unlocking Across the UK and Ireland
For a garage elsewhere in the UK or Ireland, sending the ECU can avoid transporting the complete vehicle to a specialist workshop. Your own workshop remains responsible for removal, refitting and the relevant vehicle-side checks, while we complete the agreed ECU-only work in-house.
Trade enquiries are welcome, whether you have one customer's vehicle waiting or need to discuss support for future jobs. Tell us the exact unit and programming tool rather than relying on a broad vehicle list.
Before shipping from the Republic of Ireland or another location involving a border crossing, confirm courier requirements, paperwork and any applicable charges. The advertised unlocking price is in pounds sterling; do not assume postage or other delivery-related costs are included.
How the Postal ECU Unlocking Service Works
1. Contact Us With the ECU Details
Send the identification information and explain whether you need unlock-only work or want to discuss a wider programming requirement.
For garages and remappers, include your intended programming equipment. For vehicle owners, tell us what your workshop has advised and whether the vehicle has any existing faults.
2. Confirm Support, Price and Instructions
We check the available support for the supplied information and confirm the proposed work. Ask about current turnaround and return delivery arrangements before dispatch.
Do not send the ECU simply because a similar-looking unit appears in an advertisement. Confirm the relevant details first.
3. Arrange Safe Removal and Packaging
ECU removal should be carried out by someone competent, following the vehicle manufacturer's procedure. Depending on the vehicle, removal can leave it unusable until the unit is refitted.
Protect the unit from moisture, static discharge, impact and connector damage. Use suitable protective packaging inside a strong box, with enough cushioning to prevent movement.
Include your contact information and agreed job reference. Keep the ECU label readable, and do not send loose accessories unless requested.
Confirm the delivery address with us before shipping and use an appropriately insured, tracked service.
4. Complete the Agreed In-House Work
We carry out the supported procedure appropriate to the unit and agreed scope. The connection method and whether opening the housing is necessary depend on the ECU and applicable process.
There is no single method that applies to every ECU. If inspection reveals an issue affecting the agreed work, that needs discussing before additional chargeable work proceeds.
5. Return and Complete the Next Stage
Following the agreed checks, the unit is prepared for return. Your workshop can then refit it and complete the supported next stage of the job.
An ECU-only bench service cannot substitute for every check on the complete vehicle. Any subsequent calibration, commissioning and vehicle testing remain part of the relevant workshop's responsibilities.
Trade ECU Unlocking for Garages and Remappers
A protected ECU can interrupt an otherwise straightforward tuning job. You may already have the customer, calibration provider and programming equipment, but still need specialist access work before continuing.
Our role is to establish whether we can prepare that particular ECU for your intended workflow. Provide the identification data and tool details at the beginning so we can check the requirement properly.
Unlocking should not be confused with supplying a calibration file, guaranteeing a particular power figure or taking responsibility for unrelated vehicle faults. Clear agreement about each stage helps your workshop explain the complete job to its customer.
Fast Turnaround Without Guesswork
We understand that a vehicle waiting for its ECU can occupy a workshop bay and delay a customer's plans.
Providing accurate identification and a clear description of the required work helps avoid preventable delays. Current workload, ECU type, condition, additional investigation and courier schedules can all affect the total time.
Please confirm availability before dispatch. We will not promise a universal same-day turnaround or a delivery date that depends on a courier.
Unlocking Does Not Repair an Existing Fault
A locked programming interface and a faulty ECU are different problems.
If the unit has water damage, damaged connectors, an interrupted programming attempt or a communication fault, tell us before sending it. Those symptoms may require diagnosis or a different service.
Similarly, unlocking does not repair a failing turbocharger, injector fault, DPF restriction or AdBlue-system problem. The cause of any warning lights or poor running still needs to be established.
Unlocking is also not a promise of ECU cloning, key programming, immobiliser removal or universal access to every memory area. Those are separate functions with their own technical requirements.
What Happens After a Dealer Software Update?
Do not assume an unlock will survive every future programming event.
A manufacturer software update or replacement software may change programming access or overwrite relevant changes. The effect depends on the ECU and unlocking method.
Keep a record of the completed work, and speak to the relevant workshop before subsequent software updates or tuning changes. If further unlocking becomes necessary, support and any additional charges need checking at that time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Unlock Every ECU?
No. Support depends on the exact ECU and available procedure. Send identification details so we can check rather than relying on the vehicle model alone.
Does £199 Include a Remap?
No. The starting price is for eligible ECU-only unlocking, including VAT. Tuning and other services must be agreed separately. Return postage is additional.
Do You Accept Postal Work From the UK and Ireland?
Yes. Contact us first to confirm support, shipping instructions and return arrangements. For cross-border shipments, confirm any applicable courier documentation or charges before dispatch.
Do I Need to Travel to Northern Ireland?
No, not for the agreed ECU-only postal service. A competent workshop can remove the ECU and send it to us after support has been confirmed. Vehicle-side diagnosis, removal, refitting and subsequent checks are separate from the postal unlock.
Do You Offer Trade ECU Unlocking for Garages and Remappers?
Yes. Send the ECU identification, intended programming equipment and required operation. We check the proposed workflow before accepting the unit; trade enquiries do not imply a separate discount or automatic compatibility.
Will the ECU Need to Be Opened?
That depends on the specific ECU and supported procedure. We cannot promise a no-opening method for every unit.
Can I Send a Faulty ECU for Unlocking?
Tell us the symptoms first. An existing fault can affect whether unlocking is appropriate or possible, and repair or diagnostic work is not automatically included.
Can My Own Tuner Complete the Remap Afterwards?
That may be the intended arrangement, but we need to check your tuner's equipment and required programming operation before accepting the work. Unlocking does not guarantee compatibility with every platform.
